THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENTS AND ACTIVITIES OF DAILY LIVING IN STROKE PATIENTS.  Bumin G, Karakaya G, Öztürk G, Uyanık M, Kayıhan H. Hacettepe University School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, Ankara,  Turkey.

PURPOSE: The recovery of neurologic impairment and functional abilities poststroke is critical for treatment planning and prognosis. Stroke affects not only patients' motor function but also their cognitive and perceptual abilities. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between cognitive impairments and activities of daily living in stroke patients. The correlation between Functional Independent Measurement ( FIM) and Rivermaid Motor Assessment Scale used to assess of activities of daily living was also investigated.  RELEVANCE: Cognitive status is a predicting factor of rehabilitation success, especially for motor skills and functional independence in poststroke  patients. This study provides information about the relationship between cognitive impairments and activities of daily living.SUBJECTS: Twenty eight patients with stroke whose mean age was 61.39±9.76 years participated in this study.Nineteen of whom had stroke at left side, 9 of whom at right side. Nineteen patients were male, and 9 were female. LOTCA ( Loewenstein Occupational Therapy Cognitive Assessment ) was applied to assess cognitive impairments. FIM and Rivermaid Motor Assessment Scale were applied to assess activities of daily living. ANALYSIS: The statistical analysis were carried out using an SPSS package. The correlation between the variables was measured by correlation coefficient .RESULTS: The correlation between LOTCA and FIM was r: 0.649, between LOTCA and Rivermaid was r:  0.617 , between FIM and Rivermaid was r : 0.818. CONCLUSION: This study showed that   cognitive impairments affected negatively activities of daily living and physical functions in stroke patients. While planning the treatment programs for the stroke patients; physical and cognitive impairments should be considered together in the rehabilitation approaches.
