EARLY INDICATIONS OF RESPIRATORY DISORDERS IN YOUNG SMOKERS. Saito Y1, Kusaka Y2, Tone Y, Ito S1; 1Fukui Technical College for Medicine, 2Fukui Medical University, Fukui, Japan.
PURPOSE: The consciousness of smoking prohibition is crucial for promoting no-smoking education for the younger generation. The purpose of this study is to study the effects of smoking on the pulmonary functions, respiratory condition (cough and sputum) and rest-SpO2 on them. SUBJECTS: The subjects are 16 healthy men under 35 years old: 8 smokers (mean age = 28.1±3.6 years) and 8 non-smokers (mean age = 26.3±3.3 years). The smoking group people has smoking habits for at least 3 years (Brinkman Index <400, mean = 193.1 ± 126.6). The non-smoking group people had no experience of smoking. METHODS: The pulmonary functions, vital capacity (VC), forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expired volume in one second (FEV1.0), expiratory flow at 50% (V50) and 25% (V25) of FVC, maximal voluntary ventilation (MVV) and the rest-SpO2, were measured. Coughing was monitored during the test. The subjective respiratory condition was evaluated by interview with questionnaires. ANALYSES: The comparison of the pulmonary functions and the rest-SpO2 between the smoking group and the non-smoking group was proceeded by t-test. Fisher's exact probability test was used for results from the questionnaire. RESULTS: The differences of %VC, %FVC or %MVV were not significant between the smokers and the non-smokers, but, V50/V25 in smokers were significantly higher than those in the non-smokers (P<0.01). The Frequency of cough at test in smokers was significantly higher than those in non-smokers (P<0.05). Rest-SpO2 and subjective respiratory conditions were not significantly different. CONCLUSION: There is an evidence for early signs of obstruction and irritation of bronchial or bronchiolar airway in spite of no subjective indication in the smoking group. The study results are valuable for non-smoking education for patients and students.
