Autonomy has been a focus of WCPT's policies since 1995. This policy statement clearly states that "Patients/clients should have direct access to physical therapist services." However, direct access and self-referral is not a given in all of WCPT’s member organisations’ countries.
Regulation of the physical therapy profession seeks to protect the public and emphasises the importance of competency to practice.
