About the region

In a geographical area badly afflicted by earthquakes, flooding and a disastrous tsunami, one of the most important developments is a new regional initiative to get physical therapists more involved in dealing with the aftermath of natural disasters.

Representatives from the region have drafted a statement - spelling out how rehabilitation can help survivors long-term, and how specialist training in this area should be incorporated into the undergraduate curriculum.

The region has also supported many member organisations in their attempts to get the physical therapy curriculum to the degree level, obtain ministerial support for degree-based programmes, and encourage the growth of autonomous private practice.

Member organisations from larger countries have been very supportive of others, says Margot Skinner, the region's representative on the WCPT Executive Committee. The rapport between member organisations has improved considerably with improved technology for communication.

Coming up

The 16th AWP regional meeting will be held in conjunction with the 5th AWP Regional Congress in Taichung, Taiwan between 6-9 September 2013.
