Description of physical therapy

The World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT) is committed to supporting member organisations. It is in this spirit that a description of physical therapy has been drawn up in response to the expressed need of members. As a policy statement it is open to member organisations to adopt fully or in part or to develop further to meet the evolving needs of the profession.

Glossary

The WCPT glossary has been developed to support WCPT’s work on policies, guidelines and other resources (eg database of experts, common data set), to ensure consistency in terminology and to aid international interpretation. It has also been developed as a resource in its own right for member organisations, regions and subgroups to use. WCPT recommends that local terms are only used where the international term is not applicable.

Terms have been fully referenced to original sources. Where terms have been developed by WCPT they should be referenced to the WCPT glossary:

World Confederation for Physical Therapy. WCPT Glossary: Terms used in WCPT’s policies and resources. London, UK: WCPT; 2011.

The glossary is not intended to be an exhaustive A-Z of terms used in physical therapy.

Updates: an annual review of the glossary will take place. Member organisations, regions and subgroups can suggest amendments and terms for inclusion in the glossary where they are internationally applicable. Please send suggestions and comments to info@wcpt.org

Guidelines

WCPT guidelines are produced to assist member organisations and others to raise the quality of physical therapy. They may provide guidance on standards, criteria or courses of action in areas relevant to physical therapy education, research, practice or policy. They are not mandatory but designed to assist the implementation of WCPT’s policies. Guidelines are resources to assist with the implementation of policy and do not require a vote to be taken at a WCPT General Meeting.

Due to the size of the individual documents, the WCPT Guidelines are not available for download as a single file. They can all be accessed, and downloaded in pdf format from the individual policy pages, accessible via the fully policy list (A-Z) or full policy list (by category).

Individual policy statements, endorsements and guidelines are available for download via the policies section of this website.

Guideline for physical therapist professional entry level education

WCPT intends that these international guidelines for physical therapist professional entry-level education are used worldwide. They may be used for curriculum planning, curriculum development, and in internal and external quality assurance processes and standards assessment.

While the guidelines have been developed with input from and specific reference to the member organisations of WCPT, the intent is that they may be used by countries where physical therapy associations and education programmes do not currently exist and where the profession is not represented in WCPT.

Policy statements

Policy statements record the Confederation's agreed opinion on issues affecting the practice of physical therapy internationally. They are designed to be used by the Confederation, its member organisations and those wishing to further the development of physical therapy and improve health. Member organisations are expected to promote and use them, when appropriate, with other bodies, including national governments, to support national policy development. They have a simple majority vote at a General Meeting of WCPT and are available to member organisations to adopt, fully or in part.
