World Physical Therapy Day 2009 activities - Namibia
The Namibian Society of Physiotherapy celebrated World Physical Therapy Day with events throughout the week. All activities were run under the “Movement for Health” theme, as it was felt this was very relevant to work of physical therapists in Namibia.
A formal dinner and dance was hosted for 200 people. Good music gave the dancers an ideal opportunity to “get moving”. As part of a marketing campaign to raise awareness of the profession, each glass had a short note tied to it stating a condition which may be treated by physical therapy. Due to the evening’s huge success and the excellent feedback received, it has been decided that the event will be held again next year.
As for 2008, a 5km fun run was held with a slightly higher turnout achieved for 2009. To enable disabled participants to take part the run was started later. This year 5 disabled children joined in, however, next year the association would like to see the involvement of more older people. After the race free muffins and drinks were available along with some lucky draws.
A year-long project was additionally launched, whereby a short informative article will be published in local newspapers every week. A CD with 52 articles was given to two newspapers - one in English and one in Afrikaans (the local language).
Finally, the Namibian Society of Physiotherapy unveiled its ‘new look’ with the introduction of its new logo. The society’s website will be updated shortly to reflect its new image.
