World Physical Therapy Day 2009 activities - Singapore
The Singapore Physiotherapy Association (SPA) celebrated World Physical Therapy Day 2009 through holding a large public social event in a well known recreational park.
The event was attended by the Singapore Health Minister, Mr. Khaw Boon Wan. The SPA was proud and honored by his presence at a grand opening ceremony with confetti and applause from the public when he released the “Movement for Health” banner. This set off the chain of events planned for the day ahead:
- expert services provided by physiotherapists was showcased, along with the current areas in health targeted by the profession in Singapore
- the inaugural Physiotherapist of the Year award ceremony was this year pioneered, which recognised one physiotherapist for his great contribution and support to the profession over the years
- a registration booth handed out goodie bags with health promotion products
free musculoskeletal and ergonomics consultations were carried out along with fitness counseling based on calculations of body mass index and derived target heart rates. These were aimed at those suffering from neck and back pain due to poor postural habits at the computer and those who were unsure of a suitable fitness routine for themselves. Free falls assessments using the Berg Balance Scale were also popular with the older population at risk of falls- a mass Tai-Chi demonstration was the highlight of the day with ongoing sessions for the public continually strolling in despite the hot weather
The concerted efforts of the SPA’s public relations team and the Student Committee of SPA made this celebration enjoyable and memorable. Physiotherapists from all the major hospitals and private clinics as well as over 50 physiotherapy students volunteered their services to ensure the event’s success. It provided an enriching experience for the association and they are proud to have been able to help educate the public about the services offered by physiotherapy.
