Biography

Jiro Okochi was born in Chiba, Japan. Dr. Okochi graduated from Tsukuba Medical School in 1990 and has been a board certified neurologist and internal medicine specialist since 1995. He obtained his PhD in Medicine from University of Occupational and Environmental Health(UOEH) and did his medical training in medicine and neurology at the Tsukuba University Hospital, Tokyo Metropolitan General Hospital and Kyushu University Hospital. He was with the Graduate School of Medicine- Department of Genetic Information at Kyushu University from 1995 to 1998. Later, he joined the Ministry of Health from 2000 to 2001 to develop a case-mix classification for the long-term nursing care insurance. Dr. Okochi was an Associate Professor at UOEH from 2001 to 2005 and as an Associate Professor at Kyushu University from 2005 to 2006. He is currently the director of Tatsumanosato Geriatric Health Services Facilities and also an executive committee member of Patient Classification System International. He has been conducting large scale longitudinal research studies regarding functional deterioration in elderly since 1996 in two Japanese municipalities- this was the topic of his PhD in medicine. As the developer of the ICF illustration library (www.icfillustration.com), he has contributed significantly in the promotion of the ICF at a global scale.
