Biography
Alex Pollock BSc(Hons)Physiotherapy (1st class), PhD. Research Fellow, Nursing Midwifery and Allied Health Professions Research Unit, Glasgow Caledonian University. Editorial Board member of the Cochrane Stroke Group since 2008. 12 Cochrane publications (5 full reviews, and 7 protocols/on-going reviews). Research presented at National conferences, most recently as invited presentation at UK Cochrane Colloquium 2009.
Dr Pollock's research relates to evidence-based stroke rehabilitation: key research interests include physiotherapy treatment approaches, visual problems after stroke, upper limb rehabilitation after stroke. Dr Pollock currently holds grants to develop a web-based database relating to existing evidence, and future research priorities, for stroke rehabilitation; and to carry out systematic reviews and surveys of current practice relating to treatments for visual problems after stroke. Dr Pollock worked clinically as a physiotherapist from 1993-1995. From 1995-1998 she completed her PhD, which involved carrying out a clinical trial of a physiotherapy intervention in an acute stroke unit. From 1998 — 2008 Dr Pollock worked on the 'Stroke Therapy Evaluation Programme' (STEP) which aimed to encourage and improve evidence-based stroke rehabilitation in Scotland. STEP involved the delivery of education and training to allied health professionals relating to evidence-based clinical practice, the identification of research priorities, and the synthesis of research evidence within systematic reviews. In 2008 Dr Pollock was appointed as a Research Fellow within the Scottish Government's Nursing Midwifery and Allied Health Professions Research Unit, where she is involved in a number of research projects relating to evidence-based stroke rehabilitation and treatment.
