Biography
After working in neuromusculoskeletal clinical practice Alison moved into education full time in 1993. An MSc in Manipulative Therapy provided the background for development of her teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. A Doctorate in Education completed in 2004 at the University of Warwick (UK) has enabled Alison to integrate educational practice with neuromusculokeletal physiotherapy. Alison is currently a Senior Lecturer and Research Lead for Physiotherapy at the University of Birmingham (UK). Alison's research is focused on two aspects. An educational focus builds on her Doctorate in Education and has investigated international research priorities for student dissertations and other key educational issues. A neuromusculoskeletal focus is centred on the efficacy of physiotherapy management post lumbar discectomy, and in acute Whiplash Associated Disorder II. Alison has successfully completed numerous MSc dissertation supervisions, a Doctoral supervision centred on Mobilisations with Movement in Low Back Pain Management, and an MPhil exploring management of dyslexia in health care education. Current Doctoral supervisions include: the effect of cervical manipulation on eye coordination, outcome measures post ACL injury, dynamic ultrasonography evaluating nerve movement characteristics post Whiplash Associated Disorder, and the use of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation in a chronic low back pain population. Alison has published and presented her work widely in both educational and professional practice environments. Alison is Chair of the Standards Committee for IFOMPT, the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Therapy and Rehabilitation, and is on the Editorial Board of Manual Therapy.
