Biography
Stephanie Nixon, PhD, is a physiotherapist who has worked in HIV research, education and care for over 12 years. Her primary appointment is in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Toronto. Since 2006, Stephanie has also been a Research Associate with HEARD, an organization based in South Africa conducting research on the impact of HIV in Southern and Eastern Africa. Stephanie is also the Academic Director for the International Centre for Disability and Rehabilitation (ICDR). In 1997, she helped found the Canadian Working Group on HIV and Rehabilitation in 1997. In 2000, she published the seminal article, "Shifting Perspectives: Reconceptualizing HIV Disease in Rehabilitation Framework". She also co-led the first prevalence study of disablement experienced by people living with HIV. In 2001, Dr. Nixon's research focus expanded to include international issues in HIV. She has twice lived in South Africa where she leads two large HIV research projects. She was also named Academic Director of the International Centre for Disability and Rehabilitation (ICDR) at the University of Toronto. In 2009, Dr. Nixon received the Award of Excellence in HIV and Rehabilitation. Dr. Nixon now aims to advance a research programme that unites her body of Canadian research on HIV and disability with similar concerns that are emerging in Southern Africa. She is co-author of the forthcoming: Hanass-Hancock J, Nixon S. The Fields of HIV and Disability: Past, Present and Future. Journal of the International AIDS Society (in press).
