Brief outline (Detailed outline)
This course will cover 2 commonly seen diagnoses in older persons: knee and back pain. Evidence based functional tools and treatments will be discussed and protocols will be compiled that progress older patients from acute care to community based rehabilitation programs. This interactive, case-study driven course will supply ready to use evidence.
IPTOP lunchtime session
In addition the International Association of Physical Therapists working with Older People (IPTOP) will be convening a lunch time session to present ideas on community based policy to inspire aging adults to MOVE IT. This interactive policy discussion will bring to the participant a global initiative to get older people moving. Convenors of this session on behalf of IPTOP will be: Bhanu Ramaswamy (United Kingdom), Jennifer Bottomley (United States of America), and J S M Hobbelen (Netherlands).
Objectives
- Select evidence based interventions and outcome measures to design comprehensive rehabilitation and prevention programs for back and knee pain in older persons.
- Modify existing rehabilitation programs for back and knee pain commonly seen in older persons based on the most current evidence.
- Dissect and develop treatment protocols for back and knee pain in older persons and develop an international initiative for physical activity and aging.

Positions/Appointments: President of Great Seminars and Books. Adjunct Professor at George Washington University College of Medicine. Clinical Professor University of Maryland. Teaching/ Presentations: Over 200 continuing education seminars in the last 25 years across the United States and in over 15 countries. These range from one hour to 3 days in length. Publications: Authored the first textbook in the area of geriatric rehabilitation in 1985. Written over 15 books on the topic of geriatric rehabilitation. Edited an award winning journal for over 25 years entitled Topics in Geriatric Rehabilitation. Written numerous articles and chapters in this subject area. Research: Conducted original clinical research on rehabilitation of back and knee pain in the older person. Professional Practice: Owned a large private practice for 22 year and now owns a small private practice and conducts volunteer community based rehabilitation. Membership/ Honors: Clinical Excellence Award and Joan Mills Award from the Section on Geriatrics from the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). Lucy Blair Service Award and Catherine Worthingham Fellow from the APTA.
