Low bone mass, osteoporosis, and osteoporotic fracture are costly in terms of personal morbidity and mortality and economic tolls to society. Physical therapists are key in prevention of osteoporosis, fracture, and disability. This session will review the examination, evaluation, and exercise prescription to prevent and treat osteoporosis and osteoporotic fracture.
Objectives
- Participants will understand the personal and societal costs of osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures including morbidity and mortality following osteoporotic fracture and societal economic tolls.
- Participants will demonstrate evidence-based tests and measures for the examination of a person with osteoporosis and risk of fracture including balance testing for the prevention of fracture.
- Participants will be able to prescribe evidence-based exercise for an individual with low bone mass, osteoporosis, and risk of fracture and discuss challenges of exercise with strategies to overcome specific challenges.
