This course will review the evidence for managing patients with cardiovascular disorders including risk factors, treatment strategies, clinical prediction rules and guidelines, standardized measurement tools, techniques for patient monitoring and the interaction between activity and medication. Inpatient and outpatient case studies will be used to apply evidence and stimulate discussion.

Objectives

  • Use clinical prediction rules, guidelines and standardized tests to evaluate and treat patients with cardiovascular disorders.
  • Adapt plans of care for patients with cardiovascular disorders based on medication review and response to activity.
  • Identify risk factors for cardiovascular disease and discuss effective strategies to reduce risk and promote overall health.

Lisa Dehner (United States of America)

Dr. Lisa Dehner PT, PhD is an Associate Professor of Physical Therapy at the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, Ohio and teaches pathophysiology, pharmacology, neuroscience, inpatient care skills and management of the geriatric patient.  Dr. Dehner has presented at numerous US regional and national conferences on the topics of pharmacology as well as the management of geriatric and medically complex patients with an emphasis on cardiovascular disease.  Dr. Dehner practices in geriatrics and is conducting research on the use of medications and their impact on rehabilitation of long-term care residents.  Most recently, Dr. Dehner authored “Complementary and Alternative Pharmacology” in Pharmacology for Physical Therapists (2nd ed. Gladson, B., to be published in late 2010).  Dr. Dehner has been a member of the American Physical Therapy Association since 1992 and is currently a geriatrics section member.

Karen Holtgrefe (United States of America)

Dr. Karen Holtgrefe, PT, DHS, OCS is an Associate Professor and Chair of Physical Therapy at the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, Ohio.  She teaches research/evidence based practice and management of patients in the acute care setting, and cardiopulmonary PT.  Dr Holtgrefe is the author of two chapters “Prevention, Health and Wellness” and “Principles of Aerobic Exercise” in Therapeutic Exercise:  Fundamentals and Techniques, by Kisner & Colby.  She has presented at numerous US regional and a US national conference on differential diagnosis, medical screening, and cardiovascular and pulmonary issues with emphasis on acute care management. Her present research focus is related to inpatient treatment following total joint replacement surgery. Dr. Holtgrefe has been a member of the American Physical Therapy Association since 1980 and is currently an acute care, cardiopulmonary, and education section member.  Dr. Holtgrefe also serves on the acute care section subject matter task force for the development of an acute care specialty.  She continues to practice clinically in the area of acute care.
