From the President and Secretary General
This month physical therapists from across the Africa Region gathered in Accra Ghana for the region’s 8th conference and meeting. Increasing membership has been a priority of the region and progress in this area was celebrated by welcoming participants from several countries where WCPT does not currently have a member organisation including Benin and Niger. Representatives of the Ministry of Health and of the Vice President of Ghana were in attendance at the opening and strongly endorsed the role of physical therapists in the health of populations and highlighted the need to raise the profile of physical therapy in the eyes of the public and policy makers. With World Physical Therapy Day around the corner, the timing is perfect to consider opportunities to raise the profession’s profile.
Kind regards
Marilyn Moffat and Brenda J Myers

World Physical Therapy Day
With just over 5 weeks to go there is no time to waste in planning your events for 8 September. New information is now available to download for World Physical Therapy Day 2010 at http://www.wcpt.org/node/28728:
World Physical Therapy Day has proven to be an invaluable opportunity for physical therapists around the world to promote the work of the profession and highlight the vital role it plays in global health. As in the two previous years, we are continuing with the Movement for Health theme, with new materials added for 2010 on both active aging and how physical therapists help people affected by HIV/AIDS.
The material we provide is deliberately wide-ranging, providing a basis for activities and campaigns to suit the particular priorities of physical therapists in different settings and geographical areas.

This month's free article from Educata is now available for download via the WCPT website at http://www.wcpt.org/node/29540.
Effects of work ability and health promoting interventions for women with musculoskeletal symptoms: a 9-month prospective study by Larsson A, Karlqvist L and Gard G.
The article looks at women working in the public human service sector in ‘overstrained’ situations running the risk of musculoskeletal symptoms and long-term sick leave, and how by gaining greater control over decisions and actions affecting their health, a better level of health and work ability may be maintained.
