August 2010

From the President and Secretary General

On 8th September 1951, WCPT held its inaugural meeting in Copenhagen Denmark. There were delegates from 14 national physical therapy organisations including 11 founding bodies and several others that were working toward membership. Mildred Elson was elected as the first President, and work began to support the development of the profession around the world and to establish a formal relationship with WHO and other international organisations.

Since then, WCPT’s membership has grown to 101 member organisations collectively representing over 350,000 physical therapists in five regions. The value of international exchange, seen so clearly by those who formed WCPT nearly 60 years ago, continues to be confirmed as the range of WCPT policy documents and resource materials available continues to grow, and more and more visitors come to our website.

So 8th September, World Physical Therapy Day, provides an opportunity to not only raise awareness of the role physical therapists play in making people healthy, but to celebrate the vision of our founders.

Kind regards,
Marilyn Moffat and Brenda J Myers

Counterfeit medicine

As a member of the World Health Professions Alliance (WHPA), WCPT has joined forces on the campaign against counterfeit medicine.

The WHPA has stepped up its commitment to fight the dangers posed by counterfeit medical products among health professionals, consumers and patients and their national governments. Falsely labelled, fake, spurious or counterfeited medical products, which represent an otherwise legitimate medical product, pose a very serious public health threat needing sustained and co-ordinated international action to control.

All health professionals worldwide are urged to assist in this fight against counterfeit medicine and download the "Be aware, take action" toolkit, www.whpa.org/pubs.htm. The toolkit has been designed to help educate and improve the capacity of health professionals to detect, report and prevent counterfeit medical products. This is being achieved through raising the 'suspect' index for counterfeit products where patients on treatment do not report getting better or appear with new unexpected symptoms.

Find out more about this campaign and read the first issue of the newsletter at www.whpa.org/newsletter/WHPA-Newsletter-19-08.html.

Electromyographic analysis of the trunk in golfers by Pink M, Perry J and Jobe FW

The article examines why the trunk is the most common area of injury during the golf swing and describes and compares the muscle firing patterns in the trunk. The high and constant activity of these muscles indicates the need for an effective preventive and rehabilitative exercise program for the golfer.

The closing date for the submission of WCPT Awards has now passed. The Awards Committee are currently reviewing the nominations we have received and will be holding a teleconference shortly to agree on those nominees who should be recommended for an award. These recommendations will then be considered by WCPT's Executive Committee.

All recipients of awards will be notified early next year.  The awards ceremony will take place at a gala dinner to celebrate WCPT's 60th anniversary during the General Meeting next June.
