USD 20 (also available to purchase for ZAR 280 for residents of South Africa)
The aim of the visit will be to showcase rehabilitation services at primary level in the community in a suburb of Cape Town. Rehabilitation services in this community are provided by a rehabilitation team consisting of an Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Speech Therapist, Audiologist and 12 Rehabilitation Care Workers.
The RCWs were trained at UCT where they did a Higher Certificate in Disability studies. The overall objective of the services is to deliver a rehabilitation service in a CBS (Community Based Services) platform to ensure improved quality of life for persons living with and affected by disabilities or other health related issues. Promotion and prevention are essential features to ensure ownership and life style changes through an array of interventions directed by a professional therapist.
During the visit the work of the rehabilitation team will be outlined, some case studies presented and if possible some members of the community to relate their experience of this rehabilitation service. The CBS platform will be explained; how the continuum of care has been improved within this platform and the rich person centred approach of this service will be demonstrated and how clients benefit form a service that is provided in or very close to their living, learning, working, social and play spaces.
