Dr. Hasegawa was born in Japan and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from the International University of Health and Welfare in 2001. He received a Master of Arts in Therapeutic Recreation from New York University in 2003. He worked in the Jewish Home and Hospital in New York City from 2003 to 2007. During that time, he utilized various recreational therapies for elderly patients with various disabilities in a rehabilitation setting. He then received his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Boston University in 2009. After he returned to Japan, his interest has been in the application of technology, especially robotics and gaming, in physical therapy practices and started working for Cyberdyne in 2010. Currently he works at the University of Tokyo Hospital, treating various conditions including patients with neurological and orthopedic deficits as well as cancer patients. Since 2010, he has researched and presented various studies using robotics such as the Robot Suit HAL (Hybrid Assistive Limb) and other technologies at national and international conferences. He has been an associate editor of the Journal of Physical Therapy Science and volunteered for the non-profit organization Japanese Medical Support Network in Tokyo to support international activities for Japanese people.
