Physical therapist receives Golden Apple Award for volunteer work in St Lucia and Vietnam

Physical therapist Barbara Billek-Sawhney has received a Golden Apple Award from Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO) for her commitment to improving global health through education, training and professional development of the health workforce in resource-scarce countries.

She has completed five assignments with HVO since her first in 1998, most recently at St Jude’s Hospital in St Lucia and the Da Nang Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Hospital in Vietnam.

Dr Billek-Sawhney, a member of the American Physical Therapy Association, is a professor of physical therapy at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania in the United States. She works as an ambassador for HVO, mentoring students who soon will be project participants and sharing her experiences with professionals and students in lectures and written communications.

“I am very honoured and humbled to receive the award,” she says. “The true recipients are the people who work tirelessly day to day to make a difference in the lives of others, whether it is the people who work behind the scenes to make these service experiences a possibility or those who work each day to care for others.”
