WCPT works with its member organisations, subgroups, regions and other organisations to achieve improvements in global health. As well as joining international campaigns, WCPT also initiates its own campaigns to try and promote physical therapy, high standards of health and good working conditions for the profession.
World Physical Therapy Day
WCPT designated 8th September as World Physical Therapy Day in 1996, and today it is an opportunity for physical therapists from all over the world to raise awareness about how the profession helps people realise their potential and keep them well, mobile and independent. Each year WCPT provides member organisations and individual physical therapists with a wealth of resources, ideas and guidance to help them plan and organise activities.
Health Information for All (HIFA)
WCPT is a supporting organisation of Health Information for All (HIFA), a global social movement to improve the availability and use of healthcare information in low- and middle-income countries. HIFA is a growing global health movement working in collaboration with the World Health Organization and 300 other health and development organisations. HIFA has more than 17,000 members (health workers, librarians, publishers, researchers, policymakers and others) working for a world where every person has access to the information they need to protect their own health and the health of others. They have about 5000 members in Africa, 5000 in Europe, and 7000 in the rest of the world, across 176 countries. They interact on five global forums in three languages (English, French, Portuguese), with HIFA-Spanish to be launched later in 2017.
As a member of the World Health Professions Alliance (WHPA), WCPT is one of the forces behind a multi-professional global campaign to raise awareness about the risk factors that can cause non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic respiratory disease, diabetes, mental disorders and oral disease. WHPA has made representations on the subject at United Nations level, and makes a range of information and tools available to health professionals.
Counterfeit medical products
The WHPA, of which WCPT is a member, is concerned about the distribution and sale of counterfeit medical products. It has made statements on the subject at the World Health Assembly, organises events and publishes a range of campaign material.
Support for other international campaigns
WCPT lends it support to a range of international campaigns. The support may entail signing up to objectives, pubicising the campaign, providing physical therapy input, and ensuring that the contribution of physical therapy is recognised.
