Patrícia is a physiotherapist and got her PhD in Biomechanics focusing on the Morphological and functional adaptations of the abdominal wall during pregnancy and in the postpartum period, in the University of Lisbon. During her PhD the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology funded her studies, and she also received the International Society of Biomechanics Dissertation Grant. Her research focuses on the abdominal wall, diastasis and exercise effect on the inter-rectus distance, which resulted in many peer-reviewed publications (Normal width of the inter-recti distance in pregnant and postpartum primiparous women. Musculoskeletal Science & Practice,2018; The Immediate Effects on Inter-rectus Distance of Abdominal Crunch and Drawing-in Exercises During Pregnancy and the Postpartum Period. Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy, 2015; Prevalence and risk factors of diastasis recti abdominis from late pregnancy to 6 months postpartum, and relationship with lumbo-pelvic pain. Manual Therapy. 2014)

Patrícia is now a full-time professor at the Escola Superior de Tecnologia da Saúde de Lisboa, Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa, where the main teaching subjects are Women's Health and Exercise Physiology among others. She is also research member at the Neuromechanics of Human Movement research group in the University of Lisbon where she keeps studying women.
