Physiotherapy in South Africa
5th-14th July 2017
This physiotherapy study tour, led by senior South African physiotherapist Maryke Bezuidenhout, shows you the many faces of this beautiful and diverse land. Travel from the cosmopolitan harbour city of Cape Town into stunning and culturally rich KwaZuluNatal. Continue into Mpumalanga safari country, take game drives in the Kruger National Park, travel the world famous ‘Panorama Route’ and end in Johannesburg. Your journey is punctuated with regular professional visits and talks and provides real insight into the social issues surrounding physical therapy in South Africa. There is also a post tour extension to beautiful Victoria Falls.
Tour leader Maryke Bezuidenhout is assistant director of physiotherapy at Manguzi Hospital. When not tackling remote donkey tracks on her mountain bike or tempting crocodiles on her kayak, Maryke is found heading the 22-strong ulti-disciplinary rehab team at Manguzi Hospital in the remote north eastern corner of Kwa-Zulu Natal, where she has been working for the past 14 years. She considers herself incredibly fortunate to work with a passionate team within an amazing community.
The Manguzi Rehabilitation team has earned accolades including the Mail and Guardian Under 35 Top 200 award, the KZN MASEA award and the Rural Therapist of the Year award, and continues to trial and monitor models of rehab service delivery in a deep rural South African context. Maryke also plays an active role in policy development and advocacy as chairperson of Rural Rehab South Africa (RuReSA) and serves as a committee member on the public sector rehabilitation forum and KZN OMT committee.
Please note that numbers are limited and bookings will be issued on a first come, first served basis.
Please contact the tour operators for details of their cancellation and substitution policies.
