Physical therapist honoured for work making the profession’s voice heard in clinical guidelines

Physical therapist Philip van der Wees has been honoured by the Guidelines International Network (G-I-N) for his contribution to the development and implementation of clinical practice guidelines.

A Senior Researcher at Radboud University Medical Centre in the Netherlands, Philip researches quality, implementation, and evaluation in healthcare, with the aim of developing and implementing clinical practice guidelines.
Between 2010 and 2012 he was Chair of the Guidelines International Network (G-I-N) – an international not-for-profit association of organisations and individuals involved in clinical practice guidelines. WCPT’s European Region is a member, and nominated Philip van der Wees for the award. He was the first non-medic to be elected to the network’s board.
He was presented with G-I-N’s Najoua Mlika-Cabanne Award during the network’s conference in Amsterdam last week.
"I am very proud to receive this award," said Philip. “My objective has always been to improve the participation of health professionals such as physical therapists and nurses in guideline development. You tend to find that the process is often quite medically orientated.”
Philip has been a member of WCPT’s European Region Professional Issues Working Group since its inception in 2000.  “With the group, he has made a significant contribution and led on evidence based practice in clinical guidelines in Europe,” said Sarah Bazin, Chair of the WCPT European region.
“As part of this role he organised two clinical guideline conferences in the Netherlands, which brought together the latest thinking on guideline development, adaptation and implementation.”
Philip was presented with the WCPT European Region’s Recognition of Excellence Award in May 2012. He was a presenter at the WCPT Congress in Singapore this year.
