Bio

A/Prof Maureen Ashe is on faculty at the University of British Columbia, and is a Canada Research Chair in Community Mobility. Her research contributions concentrate on chronic disease prevention and management in older adults, with a specific focus on maximizing community mobility to promote active aging. A/Prof Ashe investigates the effect of middle-aged and older adults' physical activity and sedentary behavior, and uses objective measures (accelerometry) to quantify mobility. To date, the outcome of her work has been an increased awareness of the low rates of physical activity in community-dwelling older adults, creating a potential spiral of mobility-disability. In addition, A/Prof Ashe has also developed and tested innovative solutions to increase physical activity and reduce sitting time in middle-aged and older populations. The role of the built and social environment is a dominant theme within her program of research.
