First physiotherapy students graduate in Sierra Leone

Fifteen students have taken part in a graduation ceremony at Tonkolili District College of Health Sciences in Masanga, Sierra Leone.

The students are the first cohort to receive a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in physiotherapy, after completing their studies at Tonkolili District College of Health Sciences (TDCHS). The ceremony took place on 25 November 2023 and attracted a large audience of family, friends, staff, and distinguished guests.

The audience heard contributions from: TDCHS faculty members, politicians, directors and managers of the Sierra Leone Ministry of Health, representatives of the Sierra Leone Physiotherapy Association and World Physiotherapy. The speakers shared inspiring words of wisdom, guidance, and encouragement with the graduates, and emphasised the importance of continued learning, ethical practice, and the impact that physiotherapists can have on the wellbeing of individuals and communities.

The event marked a significant milestone for both the graduates and the college, signifying the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and academic achievement.

Awards were also presented recognising the exceptional performance of outstanding graduates during their academic journey.

The graduates took a pledge, reaffirming their commitment to uphold the highest standards of ethics, professionalism, and patient care in their future practice as physiotherapists. This symbolic gesture marked the transition from students to qualified professionals.

The ceremony was enriched by cultural performances, showcasing the diversity and richness of the local culture, adding a vibrant and celebratory element to the event.

The graduates were encouraged to stay connected through an alumni network, fostering a sense of community and providing ongoing support and mentorship for future physiotherapy students at TDCHS.
